An Artisans Testimonial by Johnny Wood
Putting the ultimate product to the ultimate test!
It's incumbant upon me to give sufficient information about the various features of our products while keeping my claims on the conservative side, allowing our customers to get into more detail with their feedback. In many cases our customers have more experience with our picks than we do, and this is especially true in the area of "Road-Worthiness." I have no doubt that each of our picks is significantly strong and can endure a very long time in this world with proper care, but I simply haven't had time to participate in a gigging/touring band since the inception of this business. So I lean heavily on the testimonials of others' to confirm the true staying power of this timeless materiel.
Many people have anticipated the potential for a gemstone guitar pick that you can actually wear as a beautiful piece of jewelry. I wanted to provide such a product but not unless it could be easily removed from the rope or chain, and be very secure when it wasn't. When I discovered the Clasp-Lock system I knew I could finally offer the long awaited Gemstone Guitar Pick Necklace. In a short time we've supplied hundreds of these new products to some very happy customers. Recently I had my chance to put them to the ultimate test on a two week adventure in the Mexican Yucatan and the high mountains of Chiapas.
I decided to test a Blemished Pick Necklace that had a tiny crack on one back corner that was not visible unless examined closely. This was a sort of handicap, setting my tested product at a slight disadvantage for a greater challenge. I brought a 16" leather rope with magnetic clasps (Update: we no longer use magnetic clasps) and a 16" sterling silver chain with crab-clasp for the casual/formal choice, but the formal occasion never came. A main concern for our customers is the strength of the rope and magnetic clasps, and I knew that any test the magnetic clasps survived would have greater odds with a silver chain and crab-clasp. Then I decided to take every wild chance I could that I might be afraid to otherwise take with a stone pick around my neck.
I'm always careful when holding a stone pick over hard surfaces such as cement, asphalt, or even hard wood and linoleum floors. But I wore my Gemstone Guitar Pick Necklace while climbing on, under, and through the massive Mayan ruins of Uxmal, Kobah, Palenque, Tonina, Becan, and Tulum. All of these ancient worlds are completely made of stone and gemstone guitar picks are rarely this vulnerable. These ruins also suggest the potential longevity stone-work can have. It makes my work more rewarding to know how long people have been working with stone, and how long they are survived by their work.
I would normally take off my necklace when I swim, but I left it on while swimming in hotel pools, at the beach, and in a giant Cenote (sinkholes in the limestone crust exposing an underground freshwater network of rivers and streams.) I didn't just swim in this amazing cenote but spent an hour snorkeling into it's caves of stalactites and stalagmites, with resident bats, turtles, and of course fish. If the necklace had come off here, or in the ocean it would have been the last time I saw it. But I came to trust that rope clasp combination like I trust the belt that holds up my pants. I felt myself checking once in a while to see if it was still there and every time strengthening my confidence that it would always be there.
I was a shameless tourist, complete with farmer's tan, video camera, and accessories bag strapped around my neck. Between that, a security wallet also strapped around my neck, and several bags and backpacks, the magnetic clasp didn't seem affected. The one thing that did unintentionally pull it from my neck was the process of removing pull-over shirts and sweaters. I wear pretty much nothing but pull-overs, and this only occured once in those two weeks and once since returning home. When you do accidently remove it in this way it becomes an instantly concious maneuver, and usually in a relatively safe environment. All in all, I can't think of a safer place to keep my stone pick. Update: our newer more durable leather ropes feature the lobster clasp, wear your Pick worry free!
Though I didn't get the opportunity in those two weeks to actually play a guitar, I did take it off several times to show people my work. I had no need to actually use it to confirm that it was a very practical tool, that much I was sure of. But for good measure I sat down and had a great homecoming jam session with the pick. I realized what an incredible bond I had with this particular pick. It performs to the same high standard that all of our picks perform, but it seems to bring its own experience to the table now. If I had any doubts about the strength and convenience of our Gemstone Guitar Pick Necklaces with the Clasp-Lock feature, I'm now completely confident. Tell us about your experience!
"With these beautiful polished stone picks, the ease of playability, the quality of service, and, most importantly, the control over tone you have as a player; Why anyone chooses to stick with crappy plastic picks is beyond me. Thank you, Picks and Stones!"
"The best $25 dollars I have ever spent on anything period!"
"I've owned stone guitar picks for over 15 years, but these are by far the best I've ever seen. The quality is excellent and the finish is perfect.
I highly recommend these picks."
Wow. My tone is changed completely. As soon as I got used to the pick (about 2 days)
I was acheiving the tone I had been stiving for for years. Worth every penny.
I've used stone for 20 plus years, but none have had the bevel just right...till now! Thank you.
I didn't know what to expect from a stone pick, and spending this much on a pick was either going to be a great decision or a really bad one. Now that I've played with it a few hours, I'm delighted with the brilliant tone and wonderful resonance. It will take some getting used to, but I'm looking forward to rediscovering my guitar - this is how it's supposed to sound!
The attack is not as agressive as plastic, very smooth. Triplets are effortless. I seem to get from string to string quicker, but who knows. I was a little wary of spending twenty bucks on a pick, but there is no wear at all and after a year I still have it.
